Kente Cloth

Kente is a hand woven silk or cotton fabric made by Asante weavers in Ghana. It comes in different patterns, design and color. Although I'm  not a Ghanian but I fell in love with this beautiful fabric. The word "kente" means basket. It is very traditional and demonstrates the rich culture of Ghana.

Kente is worn for ceremonious occasions that could be political or romantic such as weddings. A bride can choose to wear a kente fabric with a color and pattern she likes or chooses.   Some brides choose colors of kente that match their reception decoration.
Kente suites different skin colors . For example, the darker the complexion the more colored the fabric.

Different fabrics such as laces can be added to kente without overshadowing the beauty of the kente itself. Beads can also be added together to make the kente sparkle. It is sewn to fit into the latest trend making it trendy at all times.

Each color and pattern of the kente cloth is symbolic. We have over 300 different patterns of the kente fabric and guess what ? Each pattern and color of this beautiful fabric has its own meaning... Here are some of the meaning of the  colors of the kente cloth.
